PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • Designed for pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians or anyone interested in the healthcare field
  • Learn the fundamentals and particulars of becoming a pharmacy technician
  • Introduction to various pharmacy practice settings and covers drug classes, basic physiology, drug interactions and daily pharmacy operations. 
  • Train to effectively assist in pharmaceutical preparations and complete daily required tasks in any pharmacy environment, although on the job training is still a part of pharmacy training
  • Basic concepts of pharmacy calculations
  • Understand and practice math concepts and calculations needed to become a certified pharmacy technician.




    PREREQUISITES

  • High school diploma or G.E.D Adequate knowledge of 9th and 10th grade math (algebra)

  • Proficient in English (verbal and written communication skills)
  • No prior criminal record
  • 18 years old (some exceptions)
  • Hand to eye coordination and finger agility




PROGRAM HOURS

  • 105-165 contact hours
  • 75 hours didactic
  • 30 hours pharmacy calculations





INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION

  • Licensed and practicing pharmacist
  • 3rd or 4th year pharmacy student
  • Certified pharmacy technician with 2 years of experience




CERTIFICATION
Prepares for two national certification exams:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or PTCB
  • Exam for Certified Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) offered by the National Healthcareer Association or NHA

 

WHAT DOES A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN DO?

  • Work in a pharmacy or healthcare setting
  • Assist pharmacists in various practice settings by Entering patient information and data
  • Dispensing commercially available medications or compounding specialty orders
  • Preparing intravenous medications
  • Creating a safe and professional environment for patients.
