Champaign, Illinois (January 2016)–Parkland College, a regionally accredited college announced the launch of a new animal healthcare career-focused certificate program: Veterinary Assistant Training. This certificate option is designed to prepare students to fill significant employment gaps in both the business and patient services in animal healthcare.

Veterinary assistants have been identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as one of the fastest-growing professions. Parkland College will help you discover the science of veterinary careso that you can assist in providing medical care to sick and injured animals. Learn the basic physiological aspects of various animals and demonstrate your competence in working with animals under the supervision of veterinary technicians or veterinarians.
To help make the program more accessible, MK Education in partnership with Parkland College is approved by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA)— “The mission of NAVTA is to represent and promote the profession of veterinary technology. NAVTA provides direction, education, support and coordination for its members and works with other allied professional organizations for the competent care and humane treatment of animals.”
The program is offered through a blend of on-campus and online courses, and offers students real-world experiences in a hands-on externship. Students will gain a solid understanding of client relations, office and hospital procedures, animal nursing, exam room procedures (hospital sanitation, weight/tpr, animal handling and restraining and preventative care protocols), surgical prep and assisting, laboratory procedures, radiology and pharmacology.
